WHAT MAKES AN OUTSTANDING SURFER ATHLETE?
If your definition is a person who keeps on winning professional surfing competitions, then it is possible that you are missing a lot of amazing surfers out. What about surfers where you can clearly see and feel their surfing passion? Which surfers do you follow – are they surfers who have a cool riding style that can be watched time and time again?
If these are your definitions, then it is possible that you have missed out on following Laird Hamilton, who is possibly one of the best surfers in the world. I am sure many of you are wondering ‘Who is Laird Hamilton?’ as his name has never appeared in events and competitions. You may well wonder if he is a newcomer to surfing. The answer is that he is no newcomer to the world of surfing, but he refuses point blank to take part in any event which is judged. So…. how on earth can he be nominated as one of the best if he has never entered or won any surf competitions?
SURELY SURFING COMPETITIONS SHOULD BE THE BASELINE TO RANKING A LEGENDARY SURFER?
Laird Hamilton is 51 and currently resides in Malibu. He loves surfing, but has also been given titles such as The World’s Greatest Athlete and Sport’s Test Pilot without even competing in a single event! How has he managed this?
When you watch videos and see this amazing achievement and the superhuman feats which he performs, it is a lot easier to see how he has done this. Laird has invented tow-in surfing which allows surfers to take on swells which were previously thought impossible – as a result, he has surfed the world’s most dangerous wave. Other achievements also include the foil board, which was also formed part of the technique which allowed him to conquer these monster waves which tower over one hundred feet over a surfer!
This impressive list of achievements really leaves you wondering why Laird does not enter competitions as surely he would win? However Hamilton feels that surfing is an art form and that makes it impossible to judge, score and rate. Do you agree with his opinion, or is the world losing out?
