A dark and stormy day, and an epic wave rarely ridden successfully. The Wedge is a extreme abnormality of a wave and it only happens once or twice a year in Newport Beach, so not much chance for practice. This is usually a body surf spot too dangerous to surf – but Jamie O’Brien says:
“it is not fun, but adrenaline fun”
The best thing is that there is a huge breakwall, but the wave can also slam you up against the rocks. Extreme caution must be exercised if you don’t want to end up broken, or without a board! The wave is only 2 or 3 feet deep, but it slams you to the bottom when it lands on your head.
Knowing all this, these intrepid surfers still take it on. Have you surfed the Wedge?
